Yesterday, my mother and I had a cookie baking day. Mom and I are pretty much on the same page when it comes to baked goods. Chocolate and chocolate. And chocolate.
We made the classic Wagon Wheels, which have been my favorite Christmas cookie since I was a kid.
Then I took some of the Wagon Wheel dough and mixed in a touch of peppermint extract and we rolled those in crushed peppermints. These were awesome. I say "were" because I think I ate them all already.
We also made toffee crisps (graham crackers, butter-brown sugar toffee mixture, chocolate, almonds).
And a new one for us, a recipe my Aunt Amanda brought when she came to visit last Christmas, the Cornflake Wreaths.
My dad made bread. That had nothing to do with it being Christmas or Baking Day. He just wanted to make bread.
We didn't do anything that required rolling out dough or using cookie cutters. Those are the cookies that we buy.

Wait. What? You don't believe in digital cameras?

I know the quality is much better now, but I love having actual photos, and I know if I went digital, I'd just use it to upload to the computer and never actually get any prints.
I have a kick-ass 35mm SLR camera that my parents gave me as a birthday gift a couple years ago. It's getting annoying, though, because it's so big and makes me look like a tourist no matter where I am. I'm also afraid that if I get a digital camera, my SLR will be totally neglected, because it would be wholly inefficient to take two of every photo.
But since I'm a blogger now, perhaps it's time to invest. My birthday's in February; maybe I'll buy myself one then.

When I first got my digital, I worried about having prints too. I have a great printer. A couple of years ago (holy crap, just checked my math and it's more like 6 years ago), it was the bomb-diggity of photo printers. But I still never used it.
I've recently started ordering prints of my favorites from Shutterfly and the only reason I do that is to hang on the wall. I have an enormous shot I took of a Passion Flower hanging in our bathroom, and I have several dozen 8x10s just waiting to go up on the walls when I get other things in order first. I still don't print 4x6s. But in my mind, I have no need, because anyone that wants to look at them can see them here.
My mom had a kickass Minolta 35mm when I was a kid. I remember how heartbroken she was when it broke. It literally froze to death. She was taking an outdoor photo in North Dakota one winter when we went back for Christmas, and some tiny little weak part of the camera froze, and then snapped when she snapped the picture. She has a pretty kickass digital now.

It was the first and last time I ate a whole box of cornflakes in one sitting.

I ruined 3 batches of saltine toffee this year. It was not a happy cookie year in the Sox household.

That green stuff looks like food colored poo.
I hope you didn't eat it.
